Week in the Life – Sunday Preview

I’m currently sitting on the couch with Rintu (we’re calling him Rin more often than not) and finishing tonight’s episode of Mad Men. Now that it’s dark, I think I’ll call Week in the Life quits.

Before I hit the hay, I wanted to post the collage for Sunday.

We got off to a slow start this morning after the excitement of last night. You can see the other collages for my first successful attempt at Week in the Life.

Week in the Life 4/23-4/29

I knew I wanted to complete Week in the Life this year…and properly, not like last time. Last time I was barely able to take two photos a day. It was pretty terrible. I knew I wanted to have at least 5 photos for each day this time around and I knew I wanted to be able to include it in my Project Life binder.
Week 7
Prep:
  • I had pulled some 6 x 12 page protectors* from my stash in anticipation for the challenge. I decided early on that I wanted a cohesive look to my inserts without looking too formulaic. I pulled out some cardstock (mostly from Echo Park’s Dots & Stripes line*) with different colored diagonal stripes. I made sure to cut the cardstock so the stripes all went in the same direction and tried to keep the colors fairly complimentary.
  • I took some notes throughout the week on a sticky notes. I made sure to capture three things I appreciated that day and tried to capture things I ate, what I wore (which is dumb, because you can see that in the photos), and some miscellaneous notes. I wasn’t sure how I would include the information in my WITL layouts, but I knew I wanted the information around just in case.
  • Once I uploaded the photos to my computer, I decided to use Picassa to make photo grids for each day and add text while I was at it. I used Bebas in white and black and added a thin (not always consistent across collages) border to give some breathing room between the photos.

Week in the Life

It took a while for the photos to get back to me, so I decided to make my cover page. I used some American Crafts Thickers Chipboard Letter Stickers, Hardcover Black* to make the title, some deco tape from Target to create some lines, and used some paper embellishments/borders from Cosmo Cricket to add some ‘life’ to the page. I knew the interior pages would be pretty plain and I wanted to do a little bit more to the cover page.

Week in the Life

I added some flair from Ormolu with the days of the week to each layout. Again, I wanted a more cohesive look to these inserts.

Week in the Life

The titles at the top of each page are done using brown sugar Thickers from American Crafts in the Hardcover font*. I’m obsessed with how many letters you get in each pack and I adore the font! I also used black washi tape (from this suite of dark tapes) behind the letters and cut the ends to have a banner effect.

Week in the Life

All the photos used in my WITL project were taken with my phone. Most of the photos were taken using the self-timer feature of the Camera+ app and edited within Camera+ as well.

That’s it! I wanted to keep it simple, clean, and manageable. I didn’t want to take too much time away from the rest of my project life layouts, so this was something I worked on in chunks and did most of the work in one fell swoop.
How do you plan for photo challenges?
What types of things would you capture in your average week?

Week in the Life

I tried my hand at my second Week in the Life last week and I loved it.

Week in the Life is a creative challenge hosted by Ali Edwards that requires you to pay a little more attention to your daily life. It’s the type of challenge where you keep your camera handy and just start shooting the small parts of your life…but without the perfectly arranged vignettes we’re used to seeing on blogs. The messy pile of laundry, the small stack of mail by the front door, and the leftovers from last night are all things focused on during Week in the Life.

My plan is to get the photos I took printed 2×2 inches and using my handy-dandy slide protector pages to include the photos and some “stuff” in my Project Life binder for the week. I want to keep things simple and not over-think the project.

Campfire Chic - Week in the Life

I have a ton more photos but my Dropbox is organizing the uploads in a way that I can’t find them. You’ll see the Project Life layout sooner rather than later, I suppose.

Highlights from this week:

  • Rewarded myself for getting to work early with a bacon breakfast burrito from the cafe…
  • …and promptly got food poisoning, which lasted all week
  • The sunrise was extra pretty all week, I’m happy I was able to catch some of it
  • Lots of tea and soup this week – Like, every day. It was a rough week
  • I tried to get ahead on #30Lists but I’ll be doing most of that this week
  • My new Fabletics look came in the mail a day early and I was thrilled when Alex explained that my legs are the same color as Mystique from X-Men
  • Celebrated a friend’s 30th birthday, a wedding shower for a girlfriend, and did the Bridge to Nowhere hike
  • Learned that my new boss is super supportive – I was able to leave an hour early one day last week when I was extra sick

Week in the Life August 2015 with Kam of Campfire Chic

It’s the middle of Ali Edwards’ Week in the Life™ (WITL) project and I’m (finally!) keeping up with the documentation side of things.

Over the weekend I took a break from 30 Days of Lists and put together a small 4×4 album to use for my own WITL because I knew that if I didn’t set up the foundation pages and come up with a photo strategy before the week started, I’d be doomed from the start.

I’m not getting home early enough this week to get good photos, so the photo above is from Sunday. I’m keeping things simple by using a simple formula: Currently List, observation 4×4 pages, 4×4 transparency pages, stamps, and last year’s WITL kit from Ali Edwards. I will share my finished album here and give proper descriptions to each item at that time.

As for photos, I’m using my iPhone 6 for 100% of the photos. I’ll be printing them at home as 3×4 / 4×3 images and am aiming for 3 photos each day. Why so few? My workweek is pretty much the same throughout the week and I don’t need 5 photos of me sitting at my desk wearing some sort of combination of blouse + cardigan. I’m trying to capture different times of the day each day, but we’ll see how far I get before I start getting duplicates.

Why do WITL if I’m (not really) doing Project Life? That’s a good question. I didn’t finish my last few Project Life albums (I have a plan to get “caught up”) and I didn’t start my album for this year (yet) so I figured participating in WITL would get me out of a creative funk while also getting me prepared for 30 Days of Lists (which starts September 1st). I’m not much of a journaler, so I’ll be writing my daily “observations” in list form.

I plan on sharing my pages on Instagram, but it may be over on the @30daysoflists account so I don’t overwhelm my Campfire Chic account with too much scrapbooking (is there such a thing?!).

Week in the Life™ August 2015 Album

0
0

Ali Edwards hosted Week in the Life™ 2015 on August 17 – 23, and I’m finally done putting my tiny album together.

While this wasn’t an average week for me, it certainly started out pretty average…photos of my desk at work, playing games like Exploding Kittens (now available through Amazon! Yes, affiliate link) and Dungeons and Dragons at lunch, running errands, and eating tacos…it ends by giving a quick glimpse at our overnight backpacking trip through Zion National Park’s Narrows, which is a trip report (and mini album!) I need to share.

I saw some people on Instagram and different blogs saying they were going to select a different week for their project because a big event was happening or some sort of “not ordinary” thing was planned for the week Ali declared as WITL week. I decided to forge ahead and work on a week in my life that may not be typical, but it isn’t a week that is so different that it wouldn’t show what my daily life looks like. We travel/adventure at least once a month, so I wanted to show that (at this time of our lives) we can go from cubicle to canyon without much fanfare. This is the life I want to remember.

2015 Week in the Life 4x4 Layouts with Kam of Campfire Chic

Instagram Album Mini Scrapbook with Kam of Campfire Chic

I’m so happy that I kept the format for this Week in the Life™ album simple, it helped make the process a lot simpler than if I tried to be creative with this project. I think this is the first WITL album I’ve completed in my (many) attempts at this project!

For this project, I used a classic black 4×4 Instagram album from We R Memory Keepers, Currently List sticky notes, It Factor 6×6 paper pad from We R Memory Keepers, and the journaling cards and gold foil transparency inserts from the Find Your Voice Insta add-on kit. These pieces were the foundation for my album in addition to photos (printed with my Canon Selphy) and I mixed and matched different stamps from both rukristin and Kelly Purkey.

I really like the 4×4 size of this album and I have another that I may use for my 30 Days of Lists December album (that’s right, we’ll be Listing again in December! Subscribe to our newsletter so you’ll be the first to know when things get rolling) in order to keep things simple and manageable.

Week in the Life 2016 Album Pages

Ali Edwards hosted Week in the Life May 9 – 15, 2016. I started my week on May 8th and ended on the 14th, which isn’t breaking any rules, Ali encourages you to make this project work for you. Some folks prefer to wait for a week that is ‘average’ but as I showed in my Week in the Life 2015 album, I don’t mind documenting a week with a special event (in that case: a vacation).

For this time around, I decided to make my project even easier than my 2015 album and went with 6×12 pocket pages to include in my 9×12 Project Life album. I haven’t shared any layouts from my Project Life album, but it exists! That album has one two-page layout for each month. These pages will fit in nicely in that album between the May layout pages.

Week in the Life 2016 - Sunday and Monday Pocket Pages

How does Week in the Life differ from week-by-week Project Life? For starters, it is only for one week. That helps give me the confidence that I can complete the project. One week is easier to document than 52 weeks!

This is similar to Ali Edwards’ Day in the Life challenge in that you are encouraged to document your everyday…your morning routine, your commute to work, preparing dinner with your family, whatever you normally do on the weekends. Like Day in the Life, some people focus on each hour of each day they are documenting, but I like setting alarms throughout the day to remind myself to take photos and screenshots.

Week in the Life 2016 - Tuesday and Wednesday

For this week, I wanted to make sure to get photos of my new cubicle, the things Alex and I do together, and one “outside” photo each day. I didn’t necessarily get each of those things each day but I did get at least five photos each day, which is good for me! I had to narrow down the photos in order to fit them into the pocket pages I had available, and I’m really happy with the variety.

One tip for Week in the Life or Day in the Life: Get yourself in the photos! For these photos, I relied on my two go-to favorites — mirrors and a self-timer on my phone. Don’t be afraid to hand your camera to somebody else and ask them to take a photo of you or to simply hold out your phone for a classic selfie.

Week in the Life 2016 - Thursday Friday and Saturday Pocket Pages

I printed out my photos using my canon selphy printer and made labels for most of the photos using some cardstock and a magic marker. The day of the week cards are from 6×6 paper pads and white foam Thickers.

It’s nice to have a simple project like this done and in the books!

These Week in the Life layouts are part of my 16 Projects in 2016 personal challenge.

Week in the Life 2017 - Kam of Campfire Chic

Today is the first day of Ali Edwards’ challenge: Week in the Life.

I love this project. It’s less pressure than Day in the Life and it’s not as labor intensive as December Daily. It’s a great medium. I haven’t been taking many photos of everyday life lately because I haven’t printed out photos for my Project Life albums in ages and I haven’t been feeling very motivated.

What is Week in the Life?

It’s a challenge by Ali Edwards to document your every day for one week. While Day in the Life focuses on the details of a single day, this project focuses on the details of an entire week. It’s a great way to see the patterns of your life and give your memory keeping an infusion of stories that go beyond birthday parties and vacations. Document your week in photos and stories!

Week in the Life 2017 - Kam of Campfire Chic

I was looking through my Week in the Life blog posts and I think my favorite two ways I documented my weeks involved including 6×12 pocket pages in my Project Life albums. While Project Life is my main way of long-term memory-keeping, I am very behind. Hopefully, this will help me get caught up in my monthly documenting.

My plan for Week in the Life

I started taking some photos this morning on my way to work, a couple while I was at work, and a few right when I got home. I don’t have a very exciting week planned, which is perfect for this project, but I do get tired of seeing the same photos over and over, so I’m hoping to push myself a bit this week to get different stories told.

In the photos above, I wanted to capture my walk into my work. I’m so happy that it’s light out when I get to work now. There are a few weeks in December when I get to work in the dark and leave in the dark and it’s very hard on me emotionally. Today’s view wasn’t too bad. I wasn’t sure if my hair would cooperate today, but I ended up looking pretty cute! It’s a good thing, too, my undercut is a little shaggy so putting my hair up is out of the question and I was playing hostess for a Board of Directors meeting and looking decent is important to me. Also, I like taking elevator selfies to share what I’m wearing throughout the week.

Week in the Life 2017 - Kam of Campfire Chic 4-17

Once I got home, I planted myself directly on the couch to play some Skyrim and ended up sitting here long enough to see the light change as we watched some of the basketball games on tonight. I didn’t want to clean up my coffee table or straighten up the room at all to show the real story of my week. My apartment isn’t always tidy and my memory keeping should reflect that.

Once thing I love about this project is seeing what my friends put together. I’m looking forward to seeing what Kristin puts together and if Odessa decides to play along. I love their styles so much and how they focus on their stories in addition to the people around them.

Here’s to another Week in the Life!

Week in the Life 2017 - Tuesday at Work with Kam of Campfire Chic

It’s day two of Ali Edwards’ Week in the Life project and let me tell you, it was a long day.

I took a total of 5 photos today. I can’t share one of them because it has to do with a project I was working on at work, and it’s pretty boring.

Week in the Life 2017 - Tuesday with Kam of Campfire Chic

One thing I wanted to do today was take a few photos of my morning on my way to work. Yesterday, I got a photo of walking up to my building so today I tried to fill in the gaps of what I do to get there. It was very dark when I got up, so my photos of getting ready didn’t work out, but I did get a photo of the overcast skies and my coffee for the day.

I don’t always stop at Starbucks, but I do it often enough that including it in this week’s stories was natural. I’m stopped at a stoplight in the photo, I don’t take photos while driving.

Week in the Life 2017 - Tuesday at Work with Kam of Campfire Chic

One photo I try to take a few times throughout the Week in the Life project is my desk at work. I sometimes use my timer and take a photo of me working to get me in the photo and to show how my outfits change throughout the week.

I’m 2 for 2 on getting an elevator selfie this week, so I think I will try to keep getting those photos in order to show what I’m wearing to work. I took two elevator photos today and decided this one is the winner. My early morning photo was had me looking a little rough around the edges and was very similar to yesterday’s photo. This photo includes something I work with on a regular basis and I know I will recognize this orange folder in the future as I look back on these photos.

Things I didn’t get to document today:

  • Listening to a podcast as I got ready this morning
  • Lunch with Ben and Carolyn at Rubio’s for Taco Tuesday
  • The big red mark on my left cheek from leaning against my wrist for too long while reading reports
  • Starting The Handmaiden’s Tale as soon as I got home. I’m just over halfway through the book.  (Amazon Affiliate link. If you’re a Prime member, you can get this book on Kindle for free this month. If you’re interested in getting even more titles, check out Kindle Unlimited)
  • Making dinner (simple pasta), watching basketball, checking in for a flight for my boss

Week in the Life 2017 - Thursday Morning

It’s day four of Week in the Life and I’m still going strong.

I really enjoy taking a few minutes each evening to share a few photos and notes from the day. Switching up how I document Week in the Life is getting me back into the habit of blogging, and I hope that I continue sharing in this space on a more regular basis.

Week in the Life 2017 - Thursday

No photos getting ready this morning. I just don’t think it’s going to happen and I need to stop assuming I’ll get those photos day after day. The weather this morning is much different than the last two mornings, which was a nice change. It was almost too bright out and I had a hard time taking a quick photo.

I made it about two steps away from my door when I turned around and decided to stage this photo. One reason was to make sure I got a photo of the cover on my keys, and the other reason is because the door was painted recently and I wanted to make sure I got that in the photo. Going back to the door also reminded me that I need to tidy up our front to get a photo of our plants/decorations for this project.

Week in the Life 2017 - Thursday Morning

Elevator selfie? Check.

My coworker was out for the last few days and I think she was trying to butter me up by bringing me some pancakes for breakfast this morning. I had to get that in here, too! Bonus: the things at my desk that I use on a regular basis!

Week in the Life 2017 - Thursday Morning

I originally thought I would use Instagram Stories to document my week so I could use the time stamp feature, but I think that would be better for a Day in the Life project instead. While I did share a few photos this week, I know this cookie photo will make it into the final product!

There is a photo of walking into the building already, so this afternoon I made sure to get a photo of leaving the building.

Week in the Life 2017 - Thursday Kam of Campfire Chic

I haven’t been taking many photos in the evening, and tonight was no exception. I made a huge batch of nachos for dinner and played some Skyrim before jumping on my laptop. I ordered a new game and it should be here tomorrow and I have the feeling I’ll be spending entirely too much time playing this weekend so I cut myself off early.

What didn’t get captured today:

  • The coconut and chocolate donut that arrived at my desk
  • The lunch program I attended for Earth Day at work
  • My attempts to get caught up on work
  • Catching up on My Favorite Murder
  • Researching some tentative travel plans
  • Sitting in traffic on the way home from work
  • Watching basketball and Designated Survivor

Tomorrow’s photos will be a little different, and I’m hoping to get some of the same photos I captured throughout the week so far…the view leaving home in the morning, a full-length mirror selfie, arriving at my destination, leaving my destination…I’m also hoping to get two very important family members in some photos this weekend: Alex and Rintu! They are very much missing from this week’s photos and that needs to change.

Week in the Life Scrapbook Mini Album - Kam of Campfire Chic

Ali Edwards hosted Week in the Life (WITL) in April and I tried to post photos at the end of the each day here as a way to keep myself accountable to participating in the challenge. WITL is one of my favorite projects, but it can be difficult to keep up throughout an entire week and I hoped that sharing a blog post at the end of each day would make it easier to go back at a later date to put the stories into a mini album.

It worked.

Week in the Life 2017 Mini Scrapbook Album

Week in the Life Scrapbook Mini Album - Kam of Campfire Chic

My album is 4×6 inches and the covers are white chipboard. I used patterned cardstock from different paper lines to decorate the cover and foam Thickers to make the title. I handwrote “hey it’s…” and “2017” using markers and I’m happy that I included some of my handwriting on the cover instead of just sticking to stamps or alpha stickers.

I used kraft colored cardstock for my pages and each one is 4×6 in size. Many of my mini albums have pages that are different sizes and different types of paper but I decided that it was easier (and quicker!) to stick with one size and type.

The entire album is bound with two rings through holes I made using my handy dandy crop-a-dile. I love that thing and it’s been one of my essential items for years.

Week in the Life Mini Scrapbook Album - Kam of Campfire Chic

Each day starts with a blank page with a white letter sticker for the day of the week and the day stamped below. Super simple and clean compared to the layering and journaling.

The photos from the days are in chronological order and I tried to use my ever-growing collection of stamps whenever I could. I also tried to mix in stickers and different patterned and printed pieces throughout to help me use up some of my stash that I may not use otherwise.

2017 Week in the Life Scrapbook Album - Campfire Chic

As the week goes on, I got a little more adventurous with my layouts. I tried to fit in layouts with many photos and layouts with single photos to keep things interesting and to challenge myself.

I also tried to step out of my comfort zone a bit by using papers that I love since I tend to hold off on using them because I’m so obsessed with looking at them. I also tried to use patterns and colors I don’t usually reach for like florals and pinks.

Week in the Life April 2017 - Kam of Campfire Chic

My week runs from Monday, April 17th through Saturday, April 22nd. I know that Ali’s challenge was scheduled to run through Sunday, but after all the sun and heat from Saturday, I wasn’t in the mood to document on Sunday of trying to recover and trying to figure out how to play Overwatch.

You can see my previous Week in the Life projects here.
